| Washakie (Sanitarium) Thermopolis, Wyoming Creamer 2 1/2" No Maker Mark Burley & Company Hotel Dept. Chicago C.1910 The Shoshone Indians under Chief Washakie gave the hot springs to the State of Wyoming in 1897 provided that they remain free to all people forever. Between 1900 and 1920 six hotels were built in Thermopolis on site of the world's largest hot springs. All of the resorts used cold water to cool down the 134 degree spring water to a tempature of 104 degrees. Today the State Bathhouse and The Plaza Hotel (Callaghan Apartments) are the only businesses using the springs. The washakie is no longer there being torn down for many years. | Aetna Springs Aetna Springs Napa Co., California Plate 6 1/4" John Maddock & Sons England Nathan-Dohrmann Co. San Francisco C.1890's Founded in 1877 Aetna Springs became one of the most important resorts in the country. Many of the buildings were designed by the famed architect Bernard Maybeck. This was possibly his first commision. The golf course was built around 1895 & is still in use today. The resort closed in 1972 & was bought in 1976 by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. The "moonies" as they were called used the resort as a training facility until they sold the property in 1997. Many of the original buildings are still standing & there are plans to restore the springs back to it's original splendor. The resort is located within Pope Valley near St. Helena & Calistoga one of the most beautiful and expensive areas of California. Thank you to Religion News Blog for some of this information. |
